ABOUT THE PENINSULA Hampton The variety of family living, from beach front to well-established neighborhoods with tree - lined streets, makes Hampton an attractive place to call home. Gateway 2000 recently chose Hampton to locate their 2nd largest assembly facility. Many active and retired military families settle here because of the comfortable pace and beautiful surroundings. Hampton is home to NASA and Langley Air Force Base. Residents enjoy boating from the many local marinas, the Virginia Air and Space Center's IMAX films, picnics or nature walks at Sandy Bottom Nature Park and swimming or wind surfing at Buckroe Beach. Population: 138,000 James City County As Jamestown offered its many enticements to the settlers of the new world, so does James City County. Home to the Ball Metal Container Beverage Group and the Owens-Brockway Glass Containers, the county shares close business, economic and historical ties to Williamsburg. The two cities work hand-in-hand to provide an excellent school system, public libraries, and municipal offices. Rapid economic growth and proximity to other local cities, make James City County an ideal location for working families looking for a great place to raise children. Population: 34,859 Poquoson Poquoson is an Indian word for "low, flat land". The names fits this small quiet city on the Chesapeake Bay, but it does not begin to describe the qualities of this place that has such a strong hold on it natives. It has a small-town feel with a low crime rate. No matter where you go in town, you will meet someone that you know. Poquoson claims not only the continued tradition of watermen working off its shores, but also a high number of white-collar professionals. The city's median income is the highest in Hampton Roads. Population: 11,300 Williamsburg With eighteenth century colonial shops and taverns harmoniously placed near contemporary shopping and dining, Williamsburg offers amenities that appeal to a variety of tastes and pleasures. More than the restored colonial area and the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg offers new business opportunities, a growing population and exciting recreational activities that draw many families and retirees. Population: 12,606 Newport News Offering a high quality of life, Newport News' residents enjoy living in a variety of family-oriented communities, including condominiums, single-family homes and multi-family complexes. Neighborhoods tend to be expansive, friendly and full of trees. Home to Newport News Shipbuilding, Hampton Roads' largest private employer, many other "support" business are located nearby-- Canon Copiers and Siemens Auotmotive to mention a few. The area's nautical history comes alive at The Mariners' Museum, while the city offers visitors and residents the variety of the Virginia Living Museum, Newport News Park and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, among other activities. Population: 180,000 York County While the 18th Century restored homes and historic Yorktown Battlefield are captivating, lush wooded lots and quiet pace are reasons most residents live in York County. Retirees and professionals alike enjoy the quaint, small-town atmosphere that contributes to the high of life. Excellent schools, strong neighborhoods and acres of undeveloped farm lands have been attracting more young families to the county for the last few years.
